What Is BenchTech™ and What Is a Bench Degree?
A practical framework for how hands-on programs can structure skill progression, evidence, and outcomes beyond lecture-centric LMS models.
For decades, trade training has operated on a simple promise: show up, learn from an expert, and leave with a skill. That promise still holds — but the infrastructure around it has barely changed. While corporate learning platforms adopted digital portfolios and analytics dashboards for desk-based roles, trade training was left with tools designed for lecture halls and multiple-choice exams.

What Is a Bench Degree?
A Bench Degree is a credential framework designed around demonstrated skill, not seat time. The concept draws from the trade tradition of "the bench" — the workstation where real learning happens. Whether it is a culinary station, an automotive lift, an electrical panel, or a CNC machine, the bench is where theory becomes practice.
In a Bench Degree model, workers progress by proving competency through documented evidence: video recordings of technique execution, computer-vision-verified material identification, project completion with real-world constraints, and portfolio artifacts that employers can actually evaluate.
This is fundamentally different from traditional grading. A worker does not earn a Bench Degree by passing a written exam about plumbing codes — they earn it by demonstrating they can correctly identify pipe fittings, execute soldering joints on camera, and complete timed repair scenarios under realistic conditions.
How BenchTech™ Powers This

Nine Disciplines and Growing
BenchTech™ currently supports nine built-in trade disciplines: Culinary, Plumbing, Automotive, Construction, Electrical, HVAC, Manufacturing, Logistics, and Machining. Each discipline gets its own AI assistant persona, adapted terminology, module names, and branding through a dynamic skin system.
When a culinary employer uses the platform, workers see "My Kitchen" and interact with Chef Freddie. When an automotive shop uses it, workers see "My Garage" and work with Gus the Mechanic. The underlying infrastructure is the same — but the experience is purpose-built for each trade.
